With the new financial year underway, we’ve had reports that phone scammers are back in full swing. See our March 2016 article for advice on what to do if you receive a call you’re concerned about. Additionally, for assistance specific to Sydney, contact experienced accountants in Sydney for expert advice.
The most recent example was a client of ours who was rung by someone purporting to be from the ATO (on a number listed as being from Canberra!) saying this was a call from the ATO about a lien just placed on their property. They were obviously wrong, and they hung up when the client questioned the caller. We would suspect they were just about to ask for money to be sent somewhere to remove the lien!
It is essential to be vigilant, so if you receive a call from someone purporting to be from the ATO, please check with us to verify before you do anything.
